Tribute to the late, great icon Tab Hunter (R.I.P.)!
Michelle Pfeiffer’s break out role and just generally a funner, better, weirder, wilder movie than the original GREASE in every way, GREASE 2 was a bit of a box office bomb when it was released 1982, opening regretfully on the same day as E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL. But the people were wrong — GREASE 2 is it!
The choreographer of the first GREASE, Patricia Birch — with a script by Toronto-scribe Ken Finkleman — returns to Rydell High as director this time around, leading a cast that includes the insanely attractive newcomers Maxwell Caulfield and Michelle Pfeiffer. A new generation of T-Birds and Pink Ladies run the school, but when a British transfer student Michael (Caulfield) shows up – Sandy's cousin and friend of Frenchy (Didi Conn), one of few cast members returning from the first film – the rigid school heirarchy comes crumbling apart when Michael falls for Stephanie (Pfeiffer), the sassy leader of the Pink Ladies. First he impresses her with his brains, then he blows her mind when he teaches himself to ride a motorcycle like a damn demon, showing up at all the right times to kick ass and pull some sweet stunts, whether against the T-Birds or their biker rivals.
The plot works in everything from the popularity of bowling to the luau craze to Jackie Kennedy's pillbox hats, meanwhile the Four Tops belt out the movie’s outta control opening number, “Back to School Again”, the Pink Ladies don some staggering costumes for a school play about the four seasons, and a sleazy T-Bird and his douchebag buddies exploit the era's fear of nuclear war in order to coerce his girlfriend into having sex in a nuclear fall-out shelter(!), all the while singing “Let’s Do it For Our Country”. Pfeiffer, meanwhile, does a very enticing dance astride a ladder and Maxwell Caulfield gives some dreamy looks in his motorcycle gear. The Pink Ladies’ tag-along younger sister Dolores (Pamela Adlon), younger sister of the Monroe-esque Paulette (Lorna Luft, Judy Garland's daughter!), also steals every scene she’s in.
The recently departed Tab Hunter (R.I.P.) is also hilarious as a nerve-wracked substitute teacher trying to keep a handle on the exploding hormones of both the Rydell students and staff, particularly in what might be the stand-out scene of the whole movie, as Hunter leads his sex ed class in a lewd group sing-along called “Reproduction”!
How good is GREASE 2? Good enough that acclaimed author Kier-La Janisse
is writing a book about it for BearManor Media
(to be released 2019!). So maybe you (or your parents) missed it 35 years ago but now you have no excuse! It’s back to school, back in the bomb shelter and back to hell on wheels.
