Aboriginal Resource Centre- Humber College
205 Humber College Boulevard, Room LRC 2137, Toronto, Ontario M9W 5L7
In partnership with the Aboriginal Resource Centre, the Schools of Social and Community Services, Creative and Performing Arts, and Media Studies and Information Technology, IKG2019 brings together a broad range of voices and perspectives, engaging Elders, community leaders, First Nation youth, alumni and Indigenous learners across Ontario and beyond.
Indigenous perspectives on knowledge and knowing have persisted and evolved alongside mainstream models, becoming grounded in complex, intergenerational, and cumulative histories, stories and challenges. Within Indigenous knowledge systems, learning occurs over the course of a lifetime, embodied in cultural lifeways, beliefs, cosmologies, and stories of people connected to place. In considering the diversity of practices and traditions that exist within Indigenous nations, Indigenous education offers possibility, hope, and opportunity not only for the enhancement of educational outcomes but, conceived broadly, for the health and wellness of the broader community. Indigenous education contributes to the scope of human understanding, offering values, philosophies, conceptual frameworks, and important perspectives on how to move forward.
Beginning as a vision to bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, educators, and communities together, IKG has gained strength, depth, and momentum as relationships and commitments to Indigenous Education grow. This sixth gathering builds upon the learning and experiences of previous years and promises to be our best gathering yet!
Goals for IKG2019:
— increase opportunities for cross-institutional/community dialogue, partnership, collaboration, and alliship;
— build awareness and understanding of strategies that support improved policy, research, practice and leadership in Indigenous education for the benefit of all students;
— vision the future; and to
— develop capacity to meet the learning needs of Indigenous students and communities.
