Terror Trophies: Physical horror media and our collecting obsession

Movies are becoming more and more immaterial as digital streaming services dominate modern entertainment. Physical media, such as DVDs, Blu-Rays, and VHS, are unneeded, obsolete, and even reviled in our current minimalist society. For horror fans, however, these media artifacts are still very important. A lot of scholarship has been devoted to why we love horror, but little has been done to look into the appeal of the product itself. Analysis on horror collectors has largely painted them as victims of capitalism, dupes of the system. But this ignores how horror on video is meaningful to its consumers in a variety of ways. While taking into account criticisms of the media alongside deep dive into fans' points of view, this lecture unpacks the value and meaning for physical media to not only ask: why horror? But, why collect it?
